Lovingly, Respectfully...pretty please, help the poor.

Last night I happened to catch a group of distinguished intellectuals and progressive types
on C-Span.
They were discussing poverty in the US.

At one point they identified a lack of leadership in our government as a key factor in why the situation continues to deteriorate.

It was pointed out that when the financial elite found themselves in trouble, no expense was spared in providing them a bail-out.

And that when there is a call for more war to drop bombs on brown people - even with deficits as far as the eye can see, there's no problem with finding money for that.

But when it comes to the needs of the poor, the leadership becomes mute.
Paying a small amount of lip service to their plight, if any at all, just prior to election time, but going
back to business as usual afterwards.

The point was made during this C-span panel that both the Democratic and Republican parties serve the interests of the elite almost exclusively.

However, they still advocated for the re-election of the current administration.

Respectfully, lovingly, pretty please help the poor if you get re-elected.
That was the message I walked away with.

The current administration had its opportunity with majorities in both Houses of Congress prior to the mid-term elections of 2010.

But instead of championing the needs of the many - they focused on the needs of the few and told us each time of what a Historic triumph this was.

Bi-partisan agreements to bail-out the Banks.  Bi-partisan agreements to give us more corporate
controlled health insurance that you are forced to buy.  Bi-partisan agreements to allow the continued foreclosure of millions even when the legality of the proceedings are questionable.

What defies description is how these very smart, educated, sophisticated individuals on the panel,
can expertly identify the ills facing our society.
They can identify the bad actors and enablers of the bad behavior.

And then, with a straight face, tell us that we should continue to support those who are collectively
stepping on our necks.

I may not be the sharpest knife in the drawer, but if you conclude that both major political parties serve the elite at the expense of the rest of us, then it's time to find a party that will serve US.

  1. Did you see what Mitt Romney said today (2/1), "I’m not concerned about the very poor,". He went on to say how they have their "safety net". An abomination. Not that the Dems fare much better..at least Mitt is honest?. Great post. The people are far far better than their leaders.
